Ammon News - The Court of Cassation upheld a September Criminal Court ruling, sentencing a 33-year-old man to five years in prison after being convicted of molesting 10 children in violation of the Cyber Crime law.

The court declared the defendant guilty of receiving over 1,800 photos and videos of children, including some naked or half naked, which constitute molestation charges as stipulated in the Jordanian Penal Code.

The court handed the defendant the maximum sentence.

Court papers said the defendant would offer children money on Internet game applications in return for their naked photos.

The incident was uncovered when the defendant threatened to expose one of the victims on social media if they did not send him money, court documents said.

"The victim notified his family who filed a complaint against the defendant at the Cyber Crime Unit,” court papers said.

Investigators seized the defendant's phone and “found 1,670 photos of naked or semi-naked children under the age of 15 and 152 video clips containing material of sexual nature related to children,” the eight-page verdict stated.

The Criminal Court’s attorney general asked the higher court to uphold the sentence against the defendant "because the punishment he received was proper".

The defence, meanwhile, asked the court to acquit his client because "the court relied on weak evidence".

However, the higher court ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were accurate and that the defendant was given the appropriate punishment.

It was proven to the court that the defendant confessed willingly to the charges and deserves the punishment he had received, the higher court ruled.

The Court of Cassation judges were Mohammad Ibrahim, Hamad Ghzawi, Qassem Dughmi, Yassin Abdullat and Mohammad Khashashneh.
