New Saudi-funded UNRWA school opens in Amman

Ammon News - Saudi ambassador to Jordan Nayef bin Bandar Al-Sudairi and United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini Monday opened a Saudi-funded boys school in Amman.

The new school was added to 12 other UNRWA schools in the Amman New Camp that ran the two-shift system, and that its opening enabled the other schools to return to the one-shift system, providing a better learning environment for more than 9,000 students.

The ambassador said during the opening ceremony that Saudi Arabia is a "leader in humanitarian work... and places its resources in the service of humanitarian causes in cooperation with the United Nations and international organisations," noting support for the Palestinian issue.

This education project is within this context as Saudi Arabia is the second largest donor of UNRWA, and the Kingdom will spare no effort in the service of the Palestinian cause, he said.

The UNRWA chief said that the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) is a key partner of the UN refugee agency and had played a vital role in launching important projects for Palestinian refugees, including the new school, in which 1,380 students are enrolled.

Saudi Arabia is one of UNRWA's biggest donors as it contributed more than $1 billion since the start of the donors' partnership with the refugee agency.
