Jordan, EU talk economic cooperation, strategic partnership

Jordan's premier, European commissioner for neighbourhood and enlargement, Tuesday discussed the EU-Jordan strategic ties and means to further investment, economic cooperation.

Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh praised the EU's support for Jordan's development efforts in implementing national priorities and projects.

Khasawneh highlighted his government's economic priorities for the next two years that would deliver a 'quantum leap" in development. He explained the challenges that Jordan grapples with due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the challenges of hosting refugees.

He also highlighted the measures taken to reform the economic and political ecosystem to promote democratisation and economic productivity.

For his part, European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi held high Jordan's role in upholding regional stability and security.

He also reiterated the EU's support for Jordan's efforts to overcome and weather economic challenges and lure in investments that would create job opportunities and spur economic growth.

He praised Jordan's efforts in taking in Syrian refugees, emphasising the EU's support for Jordan in hosting refugees.

The meeting discussed the regional developments, not the least of which was the Palestinian cause and the efforts of solving the Syrian crisis politically.
