Ammon News - The 19th century tombstone ended up alongside a city street in Maine and left many people curious as to where it came from.

A gravestone has been discovered at the side of the road in Maine, USA.

As reported by NECN, a man who had been driving down the street spotted the eerie object with markings bearing the name ‘Mary Pratt’. He then took it to Westbrook Police, who were baffled by the case.

They decided to post a picture of the stone on Facebook to see if they could figure out where it had come from and if there were any relatives of Mary Pratt.

The post received hundreds of responses with many possible family members providing the police with information to crack the mysterious case.

Some potential descendants of Pratt contacted the police department saying they believed it was possible that the gravestone had come from the Old Baptist Cemetery in Yarmouth, Maine.

They believed that there were many graves with the last name Pratt on them in the Old Baptist Cemetery, as well as graves that date back centuries.

Due to the cemetery's age, investigators weren’t entirely sure if the stone had even come from that graveyard in the first place.

Westbrook Police Patrolman, Jeremy Smith, said: "It may not be documented like we're used to on a computer system.”

They are currently looking for signs of any graves that have been removed from any public or private cemeteries in the area where the headstone was found.

The abandoned gravestone left many Facebook users upset and confused, with one commenting: “So disrespectful.”

Another added: “I remember years and years ago when people went into a grave site and destroyed a bunch of stones. Why can’t people leave the dead alone?”

The investigation is now focused on who actually moved the gravestone in the first place.
