Ammon News - Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Nasser Shraideh on Thursday signed with the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) Rola Dashti, an agreement to provide technical support to the Department of Statistics (DoS) with the aim of developing Jordan's national accounting mechanisms and methodologies.

In addition to developing mechanisms for calculating and compiling national accounts, Shraideh said that the aim of this initiative is for these accounts and GDP figures to reflect the contributions of the informal sector, as well as to provide accurate details of the sub-sectors in accordance with the best international practices in this field.

The agreement also aims to enhance cooperation between the government and the ESCWA to build capacities to establish a sustainable national accounting system in Jordan, which ensures the continuity of issuing statistics in accordance with best international methodologies and guidelines.

The statement explained that the agreement also includes a contribution by the ESCWA to providing technical support for the implementation of a national project called "Supporting the Department of Statistics' National Accounts Statistics Compilation System."

Shraideh underlined cooperation between Jordan and the ESCWA, especially in the context of the Jordanian government's pursuit of sustainable development goals and stimulating economic activity. He thanked ESCWA Secretary-General Rola Dashti for the support provided by the ESCWA to the Jordanian government and the technical assistance provided in various fields.

He stressed that the Jordanian government looks forward to developing its partnership with the ESCWA to support Jordanian efforts in economic and social areas, and to enhance technical cooperation between the two sides.

Dashti said that this project would support the statistical structure in the country and strive to achieve sustainable development goals, and improve the quality of data for use in economic modeling processes to assess alternatives to economic and social policies.
