FM participates in meeting to follow up on Baghdad Conference outcomes

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, participated late yesterday evening in the ministerial meeting to follow up on the outcomes of the Baghdad Conference for Cooperation and Partnership, which was hosted by Iraq in August, Jordan News Agency Petra reported.

His Majesty King Abdullah, leaders and representatives of a number of countries participated in the conference that discussed mechanisms for establishing sustainable economic and investment partnerships in various fields between Iraq and the countries of the region, and to emphasize the importance of Iraq's role regionally and internationally.

During the meeting, Safadi emphasized the Kingdom's continued support for Iraq, its security and stability, which is an integral part of the security and stability of the region, according to Petra.

Safadi said that the Kingdom stands by Iraq in the process of rebuilding and consolidating the stability, pointing out that Iraq made great sacrifices and achieved a great victory over the terrorist gang of ISIS and the dark forces that must be consecrated through supporting Iraq and the efforts of the Iraqi government to rebuild and meet the aspirations of its people.

He stressed the need to respect Iraq's sovereignty and that the Kingdom will remain a supporter for the brothers and stand with them against all challenges, referring to His Majesty King Abdullah's confirmation during his visits to Baghdad this year that Jordan stands with Iraq with all its capabilities.

 

Safadi underscored the importance of efforts under the trilateral cooperation mechanism with Egypt in promoting cooperation and integration in a way that serves the interests of the three countries and the region, and promotes joint Arab cooperation.

He added that the ministerial committee at the level of foreign ministers, which emerged from the conference, will develop future mechanisms to move forward in the implementation of the conference's outcome to achieve political, economic and security partnerships, and consolidate the cooperation that serves common interests, expressing the kingdom's hope to host the conference next year in Amman.

Participants in the ministerial meeting expressed their support for the Iraqi government and its efforts to establish security and stability in Iraq, and they stressed the importance of holding parliamentary elections on time next October, and providing regional support for the reconstruction of Iraq.

In addition, Safadi and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan held bilateral talks yesterday evening, on confirming the keenness of the two kingdoms to continue strengthening historical and fraternal ties and cooperation in various fields, as per directives of His Majesty King Abdullah and Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, His Majesty King Salman bin Abdulaziz.

Safadi congratulated Prince Faisal on the occasion of the Saudi 91st National Day.

The two ministers reviewed regional developments, stressing the importance of activating joint Arab action against challenges and crises facing the region.

The foreign minister also continued holding bilateral meetings today on the sidelines of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Safadi met with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu to discuss ways to enhance bilateral ties, particularly political, economic, trade, cultural and educational relations.

Safadi said relations between the two countries are strong and there is common concern to develop them in various fields, especially economic and trade ties.

 

Safadi and his Turkish counterpart discussed regional and international developments of common interest, notably the Palestinian issue, and efforts to create a real political horizon for progress towards a just and comprehensive peace on the basis of a two-state solution in accordance with international law and approved international references.

Cavusoglu said Turkey values the kingdom's role as an important stabilizing factor in the region led by His Majesty King Abdullah.


He underlined the importance of the Hashemite custodianship of Arab-Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem in safeguarding the holy sites, the legal and historical status there, and their Arab-Islamic and Christian identity.


In a separate meeting, Safadi and Norwegian Foreign Minister Marie Eriksen Soreide, held talks focused on ways to develop close partnerships and friendship between the two kingdoms and reflect them into broader cooperation in various fields, particularly economic, investment, education and defence.


The two ministers also reviewed regional and international developments, primarily those related to the Palestinian issue.


Safadi expressed appreciation for Norway's support to help the Kingdom cope with the burden of refugees crisis and its continued support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) to continue to provide its vital services in accordance with its UN mandate.


Safadi also lauded Norway's important role by chairing the Liaison Committee dedicated to coordinating international assistance to the Palestinian people, which contributes to improving the living conditions of Palestinians.


For her part, Soreide commended the solidity of relations between the two friendly kingdoms.


She expressed appreciation for Jordan's pivotal role and the intensive efforts led by His Majesty King Abdullah to enhance security and stability in the region.


Soreide also lauded the kingdom's humanitarian role and approach and hosting large numbers of Syrian refugees despite difficult economic challenges.
