Ammon News - The Daehan Wind Power Company (DHWP) on Wednesday announced the completion of its wind power project in Tafileh Governorate, with a total cost of $100 million.

The joint project between DL Energy Co. and Korea Southern Power Co. (KOSPO), started in 2012, aims to enhance energy provision security with the goal of self-sufficiency from local resources in the future, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The venture was developed in cooperation with Vestas Middle East, a global leader in wind turbine manufacturing, with a total capacity of 51.75 megawatts.

The venture will meet the annual electricity needs of some 40,000 households through connecting the project with the Jordan National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) under a 20-year agreement.

The Daehan Wind Power Project commenced its commercial operations on July 31 despite the challenges imposed by the pandemic, Petra said.

During a ceremony to announce the completion of the project, Vice President of Overseas Business Development at KOSPO Ji-Hoon Kang said that the project is considered "a clear and confident step in the right direction", and a strong indication of the Kingdom’s strategic commitment to pursuing a secure and sustainable future.

DHWP CEO Tae-Hee Cho said that the project represents a significant achievement within Jordan’s strategic path towards greater energy independence.

KOSPO CEO Seung-Woo Lee said that the project encourages the company to expand its renewable energy portfolio across the MENA region, and throughout other important markets.

The project will work to reduce the Kingdom’s reliance on conventional energy sources, and is expected to reduce more than 112,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.
