Ammon News - The British Ambassador in Amman on Sunday evening hosted a farewell reception for this year’s Chevening Scholars before they depart for the UK to take up their studies at some of Britain’s leading universities in 2021/22.

In a press statement Monday, the British embassy said that the scholars will study a variety of fields including international relations; conflict, security and development; public policy; digital business, innovation and management; strategic communications; pharmaceutical engineering; international public health; robotics and economics, equipping them with the skills to make a difference in Jordan when they return.

During the reception, the British Ambassador said: "As we look to the second centenary of UK friendship with Jordan, the prestigious Chevening Scholarships are one of our most important tools for supporting and building links with the talented next generation of Jordanian leaders. We hope that these scholarships will not only create new personal, academic and career opportunities for the scholars but also establish a link of friendship with the UK which will last a lifetime".

Chevening Scholarships are part of the UK Government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and partner organisations.

In Jordan, the application process for scholarships is highly competitive. Last year, the Embassy received over 800 applications, 55 candidates were shortlisted for interview and 16 scholarships awarded.

The scholarship offers full financial support for future leaders to study for any eligible master’s degree at any of the UK’s world-leading universities. Applicants must have leadership skills and at least two years of work experience.

So far, a total of 615 students have been sent from Jordan to study in the United Kingdom, and many of them now occupy prominent positions in areas such as government, politics, science and business.

Currently, more than 1,500 scholarships are on offer globally for the next academic year, representing a significant investment from the UK Government in developing the leaders of tomorrow. Chevening applications for the 2022/2023 academic year are currently open until November 2. Applications should be submitted via www.chevening.org/apply.
