The Ministry of Social Development and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to provide technical assistance and raise the ministry's capacity to implement programmes to support needy groups in the Kingdom.

Under the MoU, the WFP will provide the ministry with tools, systems and training and capacity-building means to improve its readiness to respond to emergencies and expand social protection programmes.

"This memo is a continuation of previous agreements and the fruitful cooperation between the ministry and the WFP, as it aims to build the capacity of the ministry's cadres and support monitoring and evaluation systems and the productivity enhancement programme," Minister of Social Development Ayman Al-Mufleh said.

WFP Representative and Country Director in Jordan Alberto Correia Mendes said that the WFP supports the ministry in providing social services, noting that the Jordanian government is "a regional leader" in the field of social protection through its role within the national social protection strategy and its response to the repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said that the "successful" partnership between the WFP and the National Aid Fund prompted the UN agency to work with the Ministry of Social Development to develop monitoring, evaluation and shock response systems.

The WFP began work in Jordan in 1964, joining forces with the government to respond to humanitarian needs, address the underlying causes of food insecurity and provide technical support to social protection programmes.
