Ammon News -

Members of the Royal Committee to Modernise the Political System met Tuesday evening with a number of party, civil and academic figures from various segments of society in the city of Salt, northwest Amman.

The meeting, held at the Salt Development Corporation‎ and organized by the "Ambassadors of Law" initiative and the Salt Youth Group, discussed opinions and ideas related to the work of the committee, particularly the amendment of the election law and the empowerment of youth and women.

Head of the Youth Empowerment Committee, Mohammad Abu Rumman, and member of the Women’s Empowerment Committee, Reem Abu Hassan, and former MP Dima Tahboub, spoke at the meeting.

Abu Rumman said The committee is open to everyone, and listens to various opinions and proposals, pointing out that these opinions receive great attention and contribute to enriching the discussions it is conducting within the main themes included in the royal message.

He added that there is a clear political decision for the political empowerment of youth, and that this is equally important alongside economic empowerment, turning young men into partners in deciding their future, pointing out that their empowerment starts from schools and curricula and passes through universities to the parties law.

Abu Hassan stressed the necessity of empowering women politically, opening new horizons for them in political life, and enabling them to compete in the parliamentary elections, pointing out to the active role of women in life and the new perspective in the economy and politics.

She referred to the royal message directives on empowering women and youth, and that this is a qualitative leap in political and parliamentary life within a legislative framework in establishing political life.

Abu Hassan indicated that the Women's Committee worked on two themes, the first of which is to provide recommendations for each of the election committee, parties and constitutional amendments.

"We are now working on how women can participate in political life, and that their representation in Parliament should not be less than 30 per cent," she added.

The second theme, Abu Hassan explained, relates to persons with disabilities and how to activate their role in the decision-making process.

Member of the committee and former MP, Dima Tahboub, spoke about the draft election law, which initially produced the closed party list at the national level, and is contested by programmatic political parties with 2-3 per cent for those lists, and there will be local lists at the constituencies level, which the parties can contest as well.

She indicated that the committee recommended that young people be empowered in local and municipal councils in a way that aligns with their presence in society, provided that it is not less than 20 per cent, stressing that young people are able to submit proposals and opinions that contribute to the modernization of the political system and work on public issues.

She underlined the importance of the participation of political parties in the parliamentary elections, indicating that the committee had not finished its work so far by making recommendations to amend the electoral law.

Members of the committee listened to points of view, proposals and remarks of the attendees, assuring that it would develop a policy paper, which would include all the proposals and opinions that were put forward and discussed during the meeting.
