The Qatar Fund for Development offered about $6.7 million as a grant to boost the Jordanian education sector and improve the educational capabilities of youth, in cooperation with the Qatar Education Above All Foundation (EAA).

A memorandum of understanding to this effect was signed Tuesday by Minister of Education and Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Mohammad Abu Qadis and Director General of the Qatari fund Khalifa bin Jassim Al-Kuwari during a ceremony attended by Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Nasser Shraideh, Qatari Ambassador Sheikh Saud bin Nasser Al Thani and Director General of the EAA's Al Fakhoora Program, Talal Al-Hathal and an accompanying delegation, according to a Planning Ministry press release.

The program will support Jordanian students and enable them to complete their studies in technical and applied disciplines that are needed in the local and regional labor market, and will also help a number of refugee students in the Kingdom, it said.

It offers education services to 800 Jordanian and refugee students, who are selected according to Higher Education Ministry criteria, and bachelor’s and local and technical diplomas, as the program will be carried out through Luminus Technical University College.

Minister Shraideh commended the deep relations between Jordan and the State of Qatar, expressing Jordan's desire to further bolster ties at the various levels. He also said the Jordanian government appreciated the Qatar Fund for Development and the Education Above All Foundation.

He valued Qatar's aid to Jordan's development efforts, including a recent grant of 10 million Qatari riyals by Qatar Charity for the Ministry of Health to buy coronavirus vaccines.

The Qatar Fund for Development also contributed a $4.2 million to the health sector to deal with the repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing challenge of Syrian refugees.

"This agreement comes in the context of joint cooperation between the two brotherly countries, and will help rehabilitate and improve the educational capabilities of youth through the support and finance of the Qatar Scholarship's (QS) Youth Scholarship Program," Al-Kuwari said.
