Ammon News - Sky watchers and astronomy enthusiasts are invited to observe spectacular Perseid meteor showers, which will light up the Kingdom’s skies for three consecutive nights (11-13 August), as the most popular shower of the year delivering up to 100 meteors per hour at the peak.

Speaking to Petra on Monday, Astronomer Imad Mujahed said that sky watchers can observe the Perseids with the naked eye while using no telescopes or any special equipment, as the meteors are extremely bright and leave persistent trails.

"For a better experience, places with no light pollution are the best to see the shower with a clear night vision. In Jordan, Wadi Rum is a great place to escape the city and observe the wide-open skies," he added.

Meteor showers are celestial events in which several meteors can be seen in the night sky, all appearing to originate from a single point. This happens when the Earth passes through streams of cosmic debris left over by comets and, in some cases, asteroids.

Perseids can feature a shooting star about once every minute and are generally brighter than those from other meteor showers throughout the year.
