Civil Defense cadres in the northern Governorate of Irbid, on Monday, contained a huge fire that broke out from the western end of the Jordan River on the Israeli side to areas of Jordanian agricultural lands.
Irbid's Civil Defense cadres were backed by Royal Air Force helicopters, armed forces cadres and mechanisms of relevant departments' directorates in the Al-Aghwar ash-Shamaliyah (Northern Valley).
Administrator of the Al-Aghwar ash-Shamaliyah district, Ali Hawamdeh told the Jordan News Agency (Petra), that the fire that broke out at 4:30pm, on the border strip of the Jordan River within the Al-Baqoura area, extended for several kilometers and destroyed forest trees, reeds and dry grass along the Jordan River. It also affected the outskirts of palm farms in the area.
Hawamdeh added that efforts of the various concerned authorities prevented the fire from spreading to large agricultural lands, noting that the control over the large fire spots was completed, while the crews of the various concerned authorities are still in a state of readiness and precaution in anticipation of a recurrence of the fire and dealing with any hot spots that may catch fire again.
Cases of fires spreading from west of the Jordan River to Jordanian agricultural lands reoccur during the summer seasons, the last of which was a fire that broke out in the areas of Zour Al-Mashari' and Sheikh Hussein on May and caused farmers financial losses.
