Ammon News - The resignation of Wafa Khadra from the membership of the Royal Committee to Modernise the Political System was accepted on Friday.
Khadra’s resignation followed “widespread anger” on social media after her comment about the Eid Al Adha sacrifice rituals.
She was a member of the sub-committee on empowering youth.
Khadra’s resignation is the second of the committee members, following the acceptance of Oraib Rantawi’s resignation on June 26th.
Veteran journalist Rantawi resigned after more than 9,000 military retirees signed a document that demanded his resignation following an op-ed he published on the Karameh Battle.
The retirees accused Rantawi of denying the role of the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army in the Karameh Battle, citing a paragraph in his op-ed related to former Palestinian president Yasser Arafat and the Fateh Movement’s decision to join the battle.
His Majesty King Abdullah on June 10 sent a letter to Samir Rifai, entrusting him to chair the Royal Committee to Modernise the Political System.
The committee’s mission will be to put forward new draft election and political parties laws; look into the necessary constitutional amendments connected to the two laws and the mechanisms of parliamentary work; and provide recommendations on developing legislation regulating local administration, expanding participation in decision-making, and creating a political and legislative environment conducive to the active engagement of youth and women in public life.
