Health Minister : Epidemiological situation "calls for optimism"

Health Minister, Firas Hawari said the epidemiological situation calls for optimism, as it has witnessed a remarkable improvement over the past two weeks.

"What we have learned since the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis is the basis for continuing to open sectors by adhering to wearing masks, physical distancing and hand sterilization," Hawari said Wednesday in a press briefing at the Prime Ministry.

He pointed out that there are three indicators of epidemiological improvement, which are the way the virus has spread, which amounted to less than 1 percent, the rates of positive tests stabilized around 4 percent, the capacity, the decrease in the number of infections and fatalities, and the decrease in hospital occupancy rates.

Hawari stated that 10 days ago, all the beds capacity in hospitals was activated to become fully functional, an increase of about 500 beds than it was during the pandemic, which reached 1100 beds, in addition to preparing cadres, expedite the admission date, and announcing employment opportunities on the ministry's platform to improve capabilities to deal with another wave, God forbid.

On vaccinations, the Health Minister affirmed that the government has signed contracts to purchase more than 11 million doses of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccine of various types to reach 4.5 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine to be provided by September and give the first dose of the vaccine to about 1.4 million citizens by June and give the first dose to about 2.5 million citizens by July.

The minister indicated that 2.2 million people has registered on the vaccination platform, adding that "we are moving steadily, as the number of first dose recipients on Wednesday has topped 78,000 doses in one day, and we will reach 100,000 per day."

He further added that the Covid-19 vaccine has been given to more than 85,000 teachers, pointing out that "we want to achieve our goal of opening in-class education by the next academic year, in addition to the great efforts being made to vaccinate the Golden Triangle in the Dead Sea, Petra, Wadi Rum and Aqaba."

The Minister of Health underlined that the Kingdom had succeeded in vaccinating about 13 percent of the target groups.
