The Jordanian Ministry of Agriculture launched on Thursday a national afforestation project. The goal, according to the country’s official news agency, Jordan News Agency (Petra), is to expand the green area and fight against desertification in Jordanian territory. The project will cover all the country’s governorates and the desert highway. During the project’s launch ceremony, the Minister of Agriculture, Khalid Hneifat, stated that the afforestation should also stimulate the country’s agricultural sector, mentioning the need for programs focused on sustainability.

For the project, 5,500 temporary employees and 300 agricultural engineers will be hired. The workers will be involved in the project for 3 months.

Also, according to Petra, Khalid Hneifat announced that the afforestation center will be launched in the area of the Al-Qatraneh desert, 90 km south of Amman, the capital city of the Arab country.

Jordan will face challenges in large-scale afforestation. One of them is the lack of water resources in the region. The climate will require the optimal management of natural and human resources and the good utilization of all available means of water collection.
