Turtle smashes through woman's windscreen

Ammon News - The 71-year-old woman was left with cuts and bruises after the bizarre incident which happened on Interstate 95 in Port Orange, Florida, US, on Wednesday, April 21.

A woman driving down the motorway suffered a cut above one of her eyes – after a turtle smashed through her windscreen.

Miraculously, the turtle survived despite colliding with a 71-year-old woman who was a passenger of the car travelling on Interstate 95 in Port Orange, Florida, US, on Wednesday, April 21.

The turtle's victim suffered a half-inch to an inch cut above one of her eyes but did not lose consciousness, Port Orange police spokesman Officer Andre Fleming said late Wednesday.

Fleming confirmed that the turtle was alive, with only scratches on its shell, and that firefighters released it into the woods near the scene of the incident.

The woman was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach for treatment, The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports.

Another motorist who stopped to help and can be heard on the 911 call from the incident, which has been released by the authorities.

The names of the driver and her injured mum have not been released by the authorities.

"It’s crazy,” a dispatch supervisor said, confirming the incident was reported at 10.48am.

"There is a turtle in there," a man can be heard saying on a 9-1-1 recording.

"A turtle!" the victim’s daughter exclaims. "An actual turtle?"

Both the unidentified woman and her mum had just left Port Orange and were headed to Daytona Beach on northbound I-95.

The driver said she didn‘t see the object until it was flying through the air and crashed through her windshield.

When the woman called 911, she hadn't known that the object was a turtle.

"We are on Interstate 95. Something just came through the windshield and hit my mom in the head," the woman told a 9-1-1 dispatcher.

"She’s got so much blood coming out of her head."

According to the Journal, it is not the first time a turtle has flown through the windshield of a car in Florida, following a similar incident in 2016.

It is thought that the turtle was flying through the air after being hit by another car.
