Ammon News -

The Ministry of Agriculture detected desert locust swarms in Azraq district, some 100 kilometres (62 mi) east of Amman, and action is underway to launch an extermination operation after complete equipment is brought to the area, affirming its readiness to deal with infestation situations.

The drive to fight the swarms comes in cooperation with the Jordanian Armed Forces (JAF)- the Arab Army, the municipalities, administrative governors, the Public Security Directorate (PSD), Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) and farmers, according to a ministry press statement issued Wednesday.

The ministry said sprinklers were used to exterminate the insects, noting that the desert locusts are in the "stage of mating and migration and do not pose any danger to the crops," said the statement.

In its daily report, the ministry launched four surveillance teams in Ma'an governorate Tuesday, and seven crews launched a drive to fight the swarms.
In Karak governorate, three surveillance teams were launched to fight swarms in its Al-Lajun, Al-Qatraneh, and Al-Hasa districts, and the control teams "exterminated almost all the swarms," the ministry said.
