FM, Egyptian, Iraqi counterparts participate in preparatory meeting for 4th leaders' meeting

Ammon News - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, Egypt Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sameh Shoukry and Iraq Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fouad Hussein, on Monday participated in the preparatory meeting for the fourth leaders meeting within the framework of the trilateral cooperation mechanism between Jordan, Egypt and Iraq, to be held during the coming period in Baghdad.

The ministers said that they will continue to work on enhancing cooperation within the trilateral cooperation mechanism through the implementation of joint projects aimed at deepening coordination, cooperation and strategic integration between the three brotherly countries and strengthening brotherhood ties between them, in implementation of the leaders' directives and the outputs of previous summits, the most recent of which was the Amman summit held in August.

The ministers discussed the levels of work and achievements reached by the sectoral ministerial teams in the three countries, in order to complement the ongoing preparations for the leaders summit to be hosted in Baghdad, stressing the need to follow up on the proposed and targeted projects and their implementation mechanisms within specific time frames in order to maximize the benefit, develop economic potential and achieve strategic integration between the three countries.

The meeting’s agenda covered a number of regional and international issues of common interest, foremost of which are the Palestinian issue, combating terrorism, promoting joint Arab action, and coordinating political positions to solve the region’s crises.

The meeting’s agenda also dealt with the targeted sectors and projects that were agreed upon within the trilateral cooperation mechanism in the areas of industrial cooperation and integration, the joint economic city, cooperation in the field of electricity, cooperation in the field of oil, cooperation in the agricultural field, food security and logistical zones, and facilitating the transportation of travelers between the three countries, and construction projects.

In joint press statements, Safadi said, "I am honored to be in Baghdad,, today, alongside His Excellency Brother Sameh Shoukry, and with the host of our dear brother, His Excellency Brother Fuad Hussein, to prepare for the summit of leaders, which His Majesty King Abdullah, is looking forward to be a remarkable step and stop towards efforts to strengthen trilateral cooperation between our countries and build on the natural foundations for integration that bind us together in a way that will be reflected in the best of our countries and all our peoples. "

Safadi added that the summit constitutes "a message that we stand with all our capabilities alongside brotherly Iraq and the Iraqi government in its efforts to enhance security and stability, rebuild and provide a better life to the brotherly Iraqi people who deserve better after years in which they made enormous sacrifices in the fight against terrorism to achieve a victory for all of us."

Safadi stressed, "Support for Iraq, its security and stability is a necessity for the security and stability of the entire region, and brotherly Iraq must be neutralized from any consequences of any regional crises or tensions."

"The message that I carry today in the name of His Majesty is that we work together because in our joint work is good for all of us, and that we stand with Iraq in the challenges it faces and in the opportunities it seeks to create for it, which will have repercussions on all of us," Safadi said.

Safadi thanked his Iraqi counterpart for "the effectiveness with which our meeting was organized today after the leaders summit was postponed in solidarity with our brothers in Egypt due tthe tragic train accident, which I reiterate once again the kingdom's condolences to its victims and our prayers for the injured to recover."

Safadi extended congratulations of the Kingdom to Egypt for its success today in solving the problem of the ship that ran aground in the Suez Canal.

"We are looking forward to an effective summit with practical outcomes that will enhance our trilateral action, achieve tangible results, and once again be a step on the road to promoting joint Arab action that we all need, not only in facing challenges, but also in taking advantage of the many opportunities that we will be able to achieve if we build on each other's capabilities," Safadi said.

Regarding regional issues, Safadi said, "We all agree in our approaches to it. The Palestinian issue is our key issue. We all want a just, comprehensive peace that meets all the legitimate rights of the brotherly Palestinian people, especially the right to its independent and sovereign state with the occupied Jerusalem as its capital on pre-June 4, 1967 borders."

"We all want a region free of tensions and regional relations based on the principle of good neighborliness, respect for others and non-interference in their affairs, and we all stand together against terrorism, we all seek to reach a political solution that ends the disaster in Syria, preserves Syria's security and stability, and restores its security and well-being and its main role in our region," he added.

"I hope that today we have been able to make some progress in preparing for a summit agenda that will be of great significance in terms of its outcomes and in terms of its message of support and solidarity with brotherly Iraq," Safadi concluded.

In turn, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry thanked the Iraqi government for the call for holding this important meeting.

He "thanked both the foreign minister of Iraq and the foreign minister of Jordan, the two leaderships and the two peoples, for the solidarity and sympathy they expressed for the Sohag train accident, which express brotherhood, solidarity, a sense of destiny and the unity of the future."

"Our meeting today came within the framework of preparing for the upcoming trilateral summit of the trilateral cooperation mechanism between Egypt, Iraq and Jordan, and we look forward to holding it in Baghdad at the earliest opportunity, culminating in the hard work and great effort made by the governments of the three countries during the past months at various levels since the last summit in Amman in August 2020, in implementation of its outputs and the directives of the political leadership on the need to strengthen and intensify cooperation and coordination between our three countries in order to achieve the well-being of the three peoples and their feeling of tangible returns from this cooperation and this mechanism."

"We discussed today the various aspects of trilateral cooperation and the projects proposed for implementation between the three countries in the economic and commercial fields in their comprehensive sense, specifically in the fields of energy, electricity, health, agriculture, industry, food and medicinal cooperation, construction and building," Shoukry added.

Shoukry said, "We discussed the importance of continuing work to maintain Arab water security, whether with regard to Egypt in relation to the issue of the Nahda (Renaissance) Dam, or regarding the water needs of brotherly Iraq, and we also addressed the need to work to preserve Arab national security away from interventions outside the Arab region, which have an impact on Arab national security and joint action in this regard."

For his part, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein welcomed his Jordanian and Egyptian counterparts, and said, "We discussed several topics to complement the previous meetings held in Cairo and Amman at the level of leaders of the three countries and in preparation for the Baghdad summit to be held at a later time during the coming period with the aim of achieving the common interests of the three countries."

The Iraqi Foreign Minister touched on a number of discussed topics related to strengthening political coordination, combating terrorism, facing challenges in the region and regional issues of common interest, including the Palestinian issue, the Syrian crisis, the war on terrorism, and developments in Yemen and Libya.

Hussein said, "We stressed the importance of holding the trilateral meeting periodically to coordinate positions and policies between the three countries."

With regard to the economic aspect of the trilateral cooperation mechanism, Hussein said, "We touched upon cooperation in the field of industrial integration, rehabilitating Iraqi factories, and emphasizing the priority industrial sectors to enhance cooperation between the three countries and in the pharmaceutical industries, veterinary medicines, agricultural pesticides, leather, clothing and chemical industries."

Hussein added that the meeting discussed the joint Jordanian-Iraqi economic city, the electrical linkage project, the oil pipeline project from Basra to Aqaba, the agricultural field and food security, transportation projects, and construction projects.
