A woman has gone viral on TikTok after showing off what a McDonald's cheeseburger and fries that she purchased back in 2004 looked like now after being saved for 17 years.

When it comes to fast food, many people love grabbing a McDonald's meal - and we recently discovered that even the Royal Family aren't immune to the allure of a Happy Meal.

But a recent TikTok video by a young woman from the US named Savannah Whitehead might put you off your favourite order.

Posting on the social media platform as @savswhithead, the young woman filmed as her mother admitted she'd kept a McDonald's cheeseburger and a packet of fries for 17 years to see how "real it is".

Yes, you read that correctly.

The parent purchased the food back in 2004 and saved the items to see what would happen to them over the years.

And the reveal left the whole family stunned - and a little grossed out.

In the clip, Savannah's mum holds up a McDonald's paper bag, telling everyone she got it in April 2004.

She then proceeds to open the bag and pull out a cheeseburger and fries.

As she does so, her children gasp and proclaim: "Oh that smells bad!"

The mum then shows how the french fries still look the same as they normally do, they've just hardened, but have no mould on them.

She then unwraps the cheeseburger and again her family is stunned that there is no mould.

The bun has hardened and they have a difficult time pulling apart the bread to look inside, but when they do they find the patty doesn't look too bad.

The only real issue seems to be with the slice of cheese, which the children claim looks like "peanut butter" now.

The video ends as Savannah proclaims the whole thing is "gross".

Her clip has since gone viral, being watched by more than 700,000 people, with over 70,000 liking it.

Thousands of people also commented to share their thoughts.

One person said: "It looks exactly alike."

Another wrote: "We can't be eating that!"

"That food is as old as me," admitted a third.


Someone else replied: "I'm shook."

Others said they weren't put off by the video and would continue eating McDonald's, while a different user claimed the food had been preserved due to the amount of salt inside of it.

McDonald's Corporate website in the US contains a statement about why their food doesn't always decompose.

It reads: "In the right environment, our burgers, like most other foods, could decompose.

"But, in order to decompose, you need certain conditions – specifically moisture. Without sufficient moisture – either in the food itself or the environment – bacteria and mold may not grow and therefore, decomposition is unlikely. So if food is or becomes dry enough, it is unlikely to grow mold or bacteria or decompose. Food prepared at home that is left to dehydrate could see similar results. Look closely, the burgers you are seeing are likely dried out and dehydrated, and by no means “the same as the day they were purchased.

"The reality is that our burgers are made only with 100% USDA inspected beef. There are no preservatives or fillers in our patties and the only thing ever added is a touch of salt and pepper on the grill."
