Ammon News - A lull in violent extremist activity during the last period does not mean that the sleeper cells crisis has ended, according to an expert on extremist groups.

Muhammad Abu Rumman, speaking during an online session, indicated that extremists are developing new methods to reach supporters and sympathisers, according to a statement from the organisers.

The session was held by the Politics and Society Institute in Amman in partnership with the European Perspective Centre and the Euro-Atlantic Council in Slovenia titled “Radicalaisation and Violent Extremism across Borders... an Ongoing Threat”.

Executive Director of the European Perspective Centre Katja Gershak stressed the importance of the need to exchange expertise across continents to combat terrorism.

Iztok Prezelj, a specialist in security and counterterrorism issues indicated the extent of the risk of extremism being transmitted through modern means of communication and cases of remote recruitment.

Florian Qehaja, founder of the Centre for Security Studies in Kosovo, said that the traditional media’s loss of influence gave more space to the means of communication that extremists have mastered in gathering followers.

The Politics and Society Institute is an independent Jordanian not for profit organisation, specialised in research, analysis and training in the areas of youth empowerment and transformation, democratic development and regional security, according to the statement
