Sampling and analysis of water taken from the Al Waleh Dam in Madaba showed no evidence of contamination with wastewater discharged from the South Amman Wastewater Treatment Plant or any other facility, according to Minister of Environment Nabil Masarweh.
In a press release Friday, the minister explained that the tests, carried out by the Royal Scientific Society (RSS), showed the dam lake's water and the water discharged to nearby valleys is compatible with the Jordanian Standard 893/2006.
However, Masarweh added, the tests showed an elevated presence of aluminum, iron and manganese, but he said that this is often caused by the mud content or suspended solids or might have come industrial sources in the drainage basin.
The minister noted that the investigation into the issue was launched following a change in the color of water streams feeding the dam. The investigation was ordered by Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh.
Masarweh noted that his ministry will today publish the full RSS report on its official website.
