Planning minister, ESCWA chief discuss sustainable development

Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Nasser Shreida, discussed with the Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), Rula Dashti, aspects of joint cooperation to achieve the global goals of sustainable development.

According to a ministry press statement, the minister highlighted the most important economic and financial developments in Jordan, especially in light of the Covid-19 pandemic and the financial, economic and social implications induced by its spread.

The discussions also went over cooperation areas between UN organization and the Jordanian government, in addition to the ESCWA's key initiatives to support development efforts in the member states, especially the projects it is implementing in Jordan in various priority sectors, especially in the fields of economic and social development, food security, transportation, technology and statistics, the statement added.

Speaking during the meeting, the minister emphasized the importance of ESCWA's role to support governmental measures and efforts taken to face these challenges, in addition to the financial and economic reform programs that Jordan's government is working to implement, and its action plan for the next stage.

The minister also stressed the importance that Jordan attaches to ESCWA's services and its "constructive" role in providing technical support to member states, public and semi-public organizations and regional programs of common interest, to increase and build capacities, with the aim of expediting the member states' growth and economic and social development process, and achieving sustainable development.

Jordan always looks forward to cooperating with ESCWA in areas of economic and social priority, according to the minister.

Earlier, the ministry had submitted proposals to ESCWA to provide technical support to implement a number of projects of economic priority, to provide various economic forecast models and to develop the related worker capacities within the Department of Statistics (DOS), which will boost the Jordanian government's efforts in planning and developing appropriate policies to back economic growth and counter poverty, through ESCWA's technical assistance to develop appropriate measurement methodologies and indicators.

For her part, ESCWA official affirmed the organization's support to Jordan in facing the "grave challenges," and its resolve to develop its technical cooperation services provided to the Kingdom.
