Ammon News - Director of the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean, Dr. Ahmed Al-Mandhari, said Jordan has set an example in responding to Covid-19 pandemic, by strengthening its health system.
Speaking during a press conference held remotely on the latest Covid-19 developments on Wednesday, he said Jordan, like all countries in the region, has suffered from the pandemic, but has not relinquished from tackling the disease effectively despite the limited resources.
In turn, representative of the World Health Organization in Jordan, Maria Cristina Profili, said WHO Country Office in Jordan would like to thank the Government of Jordan for "restless" effort to protect every individual living in Jordan as well as UN Country Team colleagues, the health partners, the WHO donors for the generous support received to protect the most vulnerable segments.
Profili said the government's response is "rapid" in strengthening its health system, which has increased the number of beds for patients by 3 times countrywide in a short time, and enhanced the capabilities of health cadres, highlighting efforts to start the immunization process countrywide.
nOTING about 300,000 people were registered on the gov't online platform, Profili said around 30,000 have already received the vaccine, and 43 Syrian refugees were vaccinated in the Za'atari camp on January 14th.
Jordan has agreed with the COVAX, a global alliance, to deliver two million doses of Covid-19 vaccines and the WHO will fund a third of shipments, she said, adding that the Kingdom is speaking with a number of vaccine manufacturers to deliver other vaccine quantities.
