McDonald's workers share what the 'buttons' on its drink lids really mean

Ammon News - McDonald's staff have explained how they use the buttons on top of the drinks, and why customers will often see two of four of them pressed in at the same time, after one visitor was left baffled.

A McDonald's customer who was left confused by the 'buttons' on the lids of the fast food chain's drinks appealed for help - and employees have now revealed what they all mean.

If you make a large order and get handed a tray of drinks, the buttons are designed to help differentiate between drinks like Coca-Cola, Diet Coke and Coke Zero - without diners having to taste test them all first.

The buttons on the lid are labelled 'Diet/Light', 'No Caff', '1' and '2' - and one customer who found staff had pressed in the number one button on one of their drinks realised they had no idea what it meant.

Turning to Reddit for help, they wrote: "My question is about the McDonald's drink lids which have the 'buttons' on them. I just ordered two drinks, one diet coke and one coke classic, and on one of them had the number '1' button pressed.

"The buttons are the numbers 1 and 2, no caff, diet/light. The only one pressed was the number 1. Which one is diet? Should they have just pushed the diet one in?

"The number 1 means nothing to me but is important I know which is which. Thank you!"

And thankfully McDonald's workers came forward to clarify what it all means - and it seems the labels above the buttons which left the customer confused don't really mean anything at all.

One replied: "Yeah seems to be different for every store but we usually just push 1 random button for Diet Coke and then either 2 random or all 4 buttons for Coke Zero.

"It’s just faster to push random buttons than spend the time to actually find the diet button on every lid I guess."

A second employee echoed this, writing: "We press one for Diet and either two or four for Zero."

And another added: "Procedure is any one for diet and two next to each other for zero."

So if you're left confused by a drinks order next time, just remember one button pushed in is the diet version of the drink, and either two or four is a zero sugar version.
