Income and sales tax revenues edged up by 8% in 2020, hitting a total of JD4.668 billion against JD4.323 billion in 2019, according to the Income and Sales Tax Department (ISTD).

ISTD Director-General Hussam Abu Ali said in a statement Sunday that sales tax revenue reached JD3.53 billion in 2019, compared with JD3.3 billion a year ago, indicating a rise of JD227 million which is equal to 7%.

In turn, income tax revenue rose by JD118 million or 12% in the past year, totaling JD1.13 billion against JD1.02 billion in 2019.

Abu Ali said the increase in tax collection is driven by a host of reforms the department applied during the past year, including expanding the taxpayer base and fighting tax evasion and avoidance.

He also explained that the ISTD applied best international tax practices, particularly in audit areas, which ultimately helped increase collections.
