Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Prime Minister, Omar Razzaz, stressed the importance of the Jordan Customs Department (JCD)'s role in protecting the Kingdom from smuggling harmful goods, which contribute to increasing the national economy's competitiveness and protecting public money.
Razzaz made the remarks during his visit Thursday to the JCD, adding the department is an "integral" part of the system working to achieve national security, protect public money, and preserve the citizen’s health."
The JCD's role is "parallel and no less important in this stage to the work of the armed forces in guarding the borders, to security departments in maintaining internal security and to the white army in fighting Covid-19," according Razzaz.
"We are proud of the department's work, as its performance has significantly improved rapidly. We see its impact on the ground despite the risk of the field operations the JCD's is carrying out," said Razzaz.
To slash drug entry, the PM also commended the JCD's efforts and measures to combat drugs and reduce their smuggling "significantly," to protect security of Jordanian society and youth from "its evils."
In this context, Razzaz pointed to the shrinking volume of smuggled cigarette shipments.
Razzaz stressed the importance of streamlining procedures targeting citizens, importers and merchants, simultaneously taking stricter measures to prevent smuggling and commercial fraud.
During the visit, the PM said the government has endorsed the Customs Law and amended it more than once, adding the Cabinet will pass legislation to enable the JCD to enhance its work in combating smuggling, fraud and toughening penalties for violators.
In turn, the JCD's director, Dr. Abdul Majeed Rahmanah, briefed Razzaz on the department's role aimed to facilitate trade, enhance the business environment to be more "competitive," contribute to achieving comprehensive security and combat drug and arms trafficking.
