Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi on Tuesday joined his counterparts from Egypt, Germany and France at a meeting on the efforts being exerted to dissuade Israel from annexing occupied Palestinian lands and breathe new life into the peace process.
During the quadrilateral meeting, which brought together Safadi, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, German's Haikou Maas and France's Jean-Yves Le Drian as well as Secretary General of the European External Action Service Helga Schmid, the officials talked about the repercussions of the annexation scheme, in case it was carried out, on efforts to bring about a just and comprehensive peace.
They were unanimous in rejecting annexation as a violation of the international law, and said that it would underline peace prospects.
Safadi told the meeting that Jordan remained firm in rejecting annexation, warning that it would have "catastrophic consequences" on all peaceful efforts, and reiterating that the two-state solution is the path to peace based on the international law and international legitimacy resolutions.
In a joint statement issued after the meeting, the ministers reaffirmed that Israel's annexation of occupied Palestinian lands will be a breach of the international law and will jeopardize the peace process.
They said they would not recognize any changes on the pre-June 4, 1967 lines unless agreed upon by the parties to the conflict.
Such a step (annexation) will have serious repercussions on the security and stability of the region, and constitutes a key hurdle to achieving comprehensive and just peace, in addition to its ramifications on relations with Israel.
The statement reiterated commitment to a two-state solution in accordance with the international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
It stated that the meeting tackled ways to relaunch a constructive reengagement by Israel and the Palestinians, pledging their support to facilitate negotiations between the two sides.
