All maintenance and restoration work of the 144-square-meter mosque, including fences, fall under the department's jurisdiction, Fayez underlined, adding that Israel, as an occupying power, must respect its obligations in this regard and cease action immediately. Fayez urged Israel to adhere to the historical and legal status quo of the al-Aqsa Mosque / Haram al-Sharif compound holding it, as an occupying power, fully responsible for the safety of the mosque. He indicated that the ministry sent an official protest memo to the Israeli side regarding the work on the western wall.
