FM, European Commissioner discuss cooperation on refugees, regional crises

09-09-2019 08:57 AM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Ayman Safadi received on Monday discussed with European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides ways of enhancing cooperation between the Kingdom and the European Union.

Safadi said that Jordan values its robust and important partnership with the EU and is keen on further cementing cooperation and coordination with the bloc, noting the support the EU nations provide to help the Kingdom bear the burden of the Syrian refugee crisis.

The European official said that the bloc considers Jordan a key partner in the region and an oasis of security and stability, and will continue to support the Kingdom through various cooperation and partnership programs.

Safadi and the European Commissioner reviewed regional developments and their repercussions on the Kingdom and the EU, particularly the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

The foreign minister said that achieving the common goal of building regional security, stability and peace requires the intensification of these efforts to bring about a just, lasting and comprehensive peace on the basis of a two-state solution that ensures setting up an independent Palestinian state along the lines of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He commended European support of a two-state solution, and stressed the importance of the European role in finding a political horizon to pull the peace process out of the "dangerous stalemate."

Safadi also called on the international community to live up to its commitment towards Syrian refugees, warning of a decline in international aid to the refugees and the host countries.
He urged the provision of aid so that Jordan can meet the needs of 1.3 million Syrian refugees it hosts.
