Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - President of the UN General Assembly, Maria Fernanda Espinosa, praised Jordan's "historic" role in promoting peace, stability, which calls on dialogue, and diplomacy in resolving regional conflicts.
In a statement to "Petra," on Wednesday, Espinosa said Jordan showed generosity and hospitality in welcoming large numbers of Syrian refugees, despite the scarcity of resources, which requires the international community's solidarity and support.
Espinosa announced that the United Nations has ratified the International Refugee Charter, which is an umbrella and political reference to assume obligations resulting from refuge plights, indicating that refuge crises need collective efforts and responsibility.
On the UNRWA's financial crisis, she said the United Nations hosted an important meeting last month in New York, where financial pledges were made to reduce the agency's deficit to $60 million from $1.2 billion, expressing hope to solve the deficit is fully by the end of this year.
She pointed to the UNRWA's "great" efforts to improve its performance, stressing the importance of the agency's services provided to thousands of Palestinian refugees, who rely mainly on its vital services in health, education and humanitarian relief fields.
Discussing the UN's efforts, she noted the world organization plays an important role in maintaining peace and stability in the region, adding the appointment of UN envoys to Syria and Yemen, as well as engaging in maneuvers to promote dialogue in the region, aim to reach political solutions to regional conflicts.
