PM launches national disaster risk reduction strategy

12-03-2019 04:04 PM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Prime Minister Omar Razzaz on Tuesday launched the National Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy 2019-2022 at the National Center for Security and Crises Management (NCSCM) to address climate change and natural disasters which pose a challenge to development.

The strategy is a national priority and a roadmap that was set up after two years of negotiations, Razzaz said, adding that it seeks to assess the natural disasters risk reduction system, identify the basic measures to limit the risks within a legal framework, set up alarm systems to detect potential disasters, raise awareness and knowledge about how to reduce risks and boost the ability of both the private and public sectors to deal with the risks.

The NCSCM will oversee and follow up on the strategy to be fully implemented by the concerned bodies according to the internationally-adopted Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, to avoid its negative impact on the national economy and its high costs that require promoting the concept of risk management of natural disasters and incorporating it into the decision-making process and sustainable development projects.

Razzaz, who is the chairman of the NCSCM, said that the strategy that was approved by the Prime Ministry is a culmination of His Majesty King Abdullah's directives to enhance coordination and cooperation among the various private and public institutions to address the risks of disasters.

The prime minister said the strategy, which constitutes a national reference for addressing the risks of natural disasters, was drawn up by local specialists and international partners.

He expressed the hope that the NCSCM and the concerned parties will raise awareness on the mechanisms and criteria of disaster risk reduction and focus in the next stage on setting up alarm systems and ensure permanent and periodic coordination between all concerned parties.
