FM says Hashemite custodianship of Jerusalem's shrines a 'responsibility'

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi Friday underlined the importance of the Hashemite Custodianship of Jerusalem's Islamic and Christian holy places, and said Jordan will always uphold this responsibility.

Addressing the forty-sixth session of the Council of the Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the top diplomat said Jordan will always dictate its potential to preserve the legal and historical status quo in Jerusalem, and ensure that Israel, as an occupying power, respects its obligations in accordance with the international law.

"The only avenue towards comprehensive peace is to resolve the conflict on the basis of the two-state solution that puts an end to the occupation, ensures the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state on the borders of 4 June, 1967 in accordance with the Arab Pace Initiative and the International Legitimacy Resolutions", the minister told the meeting.

He, moreover, emphasized the centrality of the Palestinian issue, and the importance of fulfilling the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

The minister also underscored the importance of establishing a development endowment fund to support the Palestinian refugees and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
