Death toll rises to 20 in Dead Sea tragedy

26-10-2018 05:23 AM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Jordanian rescuers searching the Dead Sea area for survivors of flash floods found the body of a girl, raising the death toll in the tragedy to 20, a Civil Defence Department (CDD) statement said Friday.

CDD paramedics have also provided medical care to 35 people who were injured during the incident, said the statement, adding that search for missing persons is still ongoing.

Torrential rains swept away a group of students and teachers visiting hot springs in the area. The pupils from a private school, along with seven adults chaperons, were swept into a valley when heavy rains unleashed flash floods in the area. Dozens were rescued in an operation involving helicopters and army troops.
