FM, Egyptian Counterpart discuss Palestinian issue

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs, Ayman Safadi, and His Egyptian Counterpart, Sameh Shoukry, on Sunday emphasized that the Palestinian issue remains the core issue in the Middle East, and resolving it according to the two-state solution that guarantees freedom and statehood to the Palestinian people as the only way to achieve security, stability and peace in the region.

In press remarks following a one-on-one meeting in Cairo, they condemned the Israeli violence and escalation against the Palestinians who exercised their legitimate right to peaceful demonstration against the occupation, and stressed the need for the international community to shoulder its responsibility and provide protection for the Palestinian people.

The two ministers commended bilateral ties and called for further mutual cooperation and coordination on all regional issues to serve common Arab interests.

Safadi congratulated his Egyptian counterpart on the presidential elections which reflected the will of the Egyptian people.

He also stressed the Kingdom's absolute support to Egypt in its fight against terrorism.

During their talks ahead of the Arab summit in Saudi Arabia, Safadi and Shoukry discussed ways of cementing bilateral relations, developments in the Palestinian issue and the Syrian crisis in addition to the war on terror.

The two ministers emphasized the importance of continuing joint action to support the Palestinian people and serve Arab causes.

Safadi said security and peace can't be achieved through oppression, killing and occupation, but by ending the occupation and fulfilling the rights of the Palestinian people to their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital on pre-June 4, 1967 borders.

He referred to His Majesty King Abdullah II constant warning that the absence of political prospects fuels despair and violence, and said the region will remain threatened by turmoil if the Israeli occupation is not ended.

The foreign minister stressed Jordan's firm position on Jerusalem as "a red line", and said the coordination is constant with the Palestinian leadership, the Arab countries and the international community to assert rejection of recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and to contain the repercussions of this decision.

He affirmed that Jordan has not and will not waive its humanitarian duty towards Syrians, but it has reached its absorptive capacity in terms of receiving refugees and will take all necessary measures to protect its security and interests from the repercussions of the Syrian crisis.

On Eastern Ghouta issue, Safadi said: "We are all concerned about the consequences of the deteriorating situation in Al-Ghouta and we condemn the humanitarian disaster taking place there and call for swift and urgent action to end this humanitarian disaster and ensure humanitarian and medical aid is delivered to that region's people." In that context, the foreign minister indicated that the agreement, which paved the way for the establishment of de-escalation zones in southern Syria, which were agreed upon through trilateral meetings between Jordan, the United States and Russia, is "the best ceasefire agreement, and we want to continue to ensure the success of this initiative as a step to stop the bloodshed and reach a comprehensive solution to the Syrian crisis.
