Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Minister of Education and Head of the Jordan National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, Omar Razzaz, said Jerusalem is a priority for His Majesty King Abdullah II in his capacity as custodian of the Islamic and Christian holy sites in the city.

Minister Razzaz made his remarks in Jordan's speech at the 39th session of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) General Conference in Paris.

Razzaz commended the UNESCO's role in the past years in preserving the heritage of the Old City of Jerusalem and its walls, in accordance with its legal responsibilities, through a series of resolutions issued by its competent bodies, which confirm the rejection of all attempts aimed at changing the historical and legal situation in the old city of Jerusalem and its walls.

The minister highlighted pressures on the educational sector in Jordan as a result of the Syrian refugee crisis, calling on the international community to shoulder its humanitarian responsibilities towards host countries and support their educational institutions.

Razzaz spoke about Jordan's plans to develop human resources and youth initiatives, as well as Jordan's international contributions related to the issues of water, energy, food, climate change, poverty reduction and cultural understanding among peoples, by hosting, in partnership with the UNESCO and a number of international scientific institutions, the World Science Forum (WSF) 2017 between 7-11 November.

The WSF will be held under the royal patronage and a wide international presence and participation from the UNESCO's General Secretariat.

The minister reiterated Jordan's supportive stance to the UNESCO.
