Home Jordan News PM says new city not meant to be new capital 31-10-2017 03:42 PM Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Prime Minister Hani al-Mulki on Tuesday said that the new city proposed to built outside Amman is not meant to be a new capital but a major investment that will be executed through the public-private partnership (PPP) model of "build, operate and transfer". The prime minister told a meeting with members of the Islah (reform) parliamentary bloc that the project will be implemented on five phases extending to 2050, noting that the first phase will entail the construction of housing units and the marketing of the project at home and abroad. He said preliminary schemes of the new city will be ready in the next few month to press ahead with the execution of the first phase. Al-Mulki emphasized that the long-term project will be an "investment gateway" and comes as part of a larger drive to boost self-reliance and development. The project is hoped to bring radical solutions to traffic jams and high population density in many parts of Amman, the prime minister said. The discussion with the lawmakers dealt with a host of local issues, namely tax law reform, public finance and commodity subsidy. In this context, Al-Mulki told the legislators that his government managed to rein in public debt and achieve better economic indicators. He pointed out that the current fiscal and economic reform program pursues the reintroduction of a 1994 version of sales tax law to revisit "ill-considered" exemptions and address "distortions" in the blanket subsidy of some commodities. Al-Mulki announced a new income tax law will be introduced stiffening penalties against tax evasion and dodging which will be treated as a crime rather than an offense. Speaking on commodity subsidy, the prime minister said the value of subsidies in 2017 budget amounted to a staggering JOD850-million from which Jordanians and non-Jordanians benefit. He said his government is in the process of studying the issue of lifting bread subsidy and will not take any step but only after finding a mechanism through which subsidy is channeled to Jordanians only.
