Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Minister of State for Media Affairs and Government Spokesperson Mohammad Al-Momani said yesterday's UNESCO's decision on Jerusalem's Old City was the fruit of active Jordanian diplomacy led by His Majesty King Abdullah II to defend and safeguard the holy city.
The minister said the decision makes its clear that the Israeli measures and violations in East Jerusalem are illegal and void according to international law.
Al-Momani pointed out that the resolution, which was jointly presented with the Palestinian side and through the Arab Group in the World Heritage Committee, reaffirms previous resolutions on the name of Al-Aqsa Mosque / Al-Haram al-Sharif as two synonyms for one meaning.
The resolution also affirms that Al-Magharbeh Gate hill is an integral part of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and demands Israel not to impede the Hashemite restoration projects at the Mosque.
The minister also said the resolution emphasizes the need to stop all Israeli practices and activities in the Old City of Jerusalem and around Al-Aqsa Mosque, in particular excavations, tunnel building and other construction works.
It also calls for dispatching the UNESCO Reactive Monitoring Mission to Jerusalem to monitor Israeli violations, in addition to appointing a permanent resident representative from the UNESCO in East Jerusalem to follow up on what is happening in the holy city.
