PM, British counterpart discuss ties, region

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Prime Minister, Hani Al-Mulki and his British counterpart, Theresa May, on Monday evening, discussed means of boosting Jordanian-British cooperation at various levels in addition to a number of Middle East issues.

In the meeting, Al-Mulki said bilateral relations are deep and strong, expressing appreciation for Britain's support for Jordan.

Al-Mukli briefed his British counterpart on a number of issues related to local affairs, among which the national political reform process and preparations for the decentralization and municipal elections in mid-August, as well as administrative reforms.

The prime minister highlighted economic and security challenges facing Jordan as a result of regional circumstances, referring to the Syrian refugee burden, which placed tremendous pressure on health, education, infrastructure and other services.

On regional issues, Al-Mulki emphasized the centrality of the Palestinian issue and the importance of the two-state solution. He stressed the need to preserve the legal and historical status of Jerusalem as a city under occupation.

The premier stressed the necessity of concerted international efforts to combat terrorism and extremism all over the world. He said terrorism knows no borders, highlighting Jordan's major role in fighting it at the various military, intellectual and social levels.

On the Syrian crisis, the prime minister reiterated Jordan's stance that calls for a political solution to the crisis, with the participation of all Syrian parties, in order to preserve Syria's territorial integrity, stop bloodshed and restore security and stability.

He pointed out to the pivotal role and great diplomatic efforts, led by His Majesty King Abdullah II, to resolve the region's issues and crises and take the necessary steps to establish security and stability.

The British Prime Minister underlined the importance of concerted efforts in the fight against terrorism, noting that combating the terrorist gang Daesh is not confined at the military level, but also at the intellectual level and through social media and internet platforms as well.

She expressed her country's keenness to provide the necessary support to the Kingdom at various levels, especially educational and economic assistance, as well as on empowering young people, adding that her country will double its aid to Jordan.
