Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Jordan, with a western help, trained Syria opposition forces to fight socalled Islamic State (IS) in eastern regions of Syria, said Chairman of Joint ChiefsofStaff Lt. Gen. Mahmoud Freihat.
In an interview with BBC aired late Friday, Freihat added that there is a security coordination between his
country and the Syrian regime through liaison officers on one hand, and between Jordan and the Syrian
opposition to combat terrorism on the other hand.
In a reply to a question on opening borders with Syria, he said there is no regular Syrian army on the other side of borders, but "terrorist groups" are existing there.
He noted that "Khaled bin AlWaleed faction," loyal to IS, is active near the northern borders of Jordan thus
poses a constant and imminent danger to the Kingdom.
Regarding the war against IS, he said the 2017 will witness the defeat of the group which lost up to 60 percent of territories under its control in Iraq and 35 percent of that in Syria.
He stressed that the IS also lost 50 percent of its leaders, indicating that this means that the year of 2017 will be the last phase of IS existence.
