Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - A social media initiative encouraging Jordanians to display their country’s flag on New Year’s Day has caught on, with the Arabic hashtag “raise the Jordanian flag” trending widely in the Kingdom.
The campaign was launched by Twitter activists last week as an expression of national pride and unity in response to the recent attacks on the city of Karak, which killed 14, including three civilians.
We will remain and #Jordan will remain with the flag raised always, God willing. Get involved by raising the flag above your houses on 01/01/2017 Because Jordan is worth more #RaiseTheJordanianFlag
It idea has since taken off, gaining backing from high-profile individuals including Palestinian singer and Arab idol winner, Mohammed Assaf.
Your flag flaps high up, oh creator of the glories of the nation. You inspirer of us and teacher of us, we will continue to make our fervor for you stronger. #Jordan our home and our tribe.
This gesture of national togetherness comes as Jordan is still reeling from the latest attack on its soil.
Following the shootings, the country’s King Abdullah stressed that "through the cohesion of the sons and daughters of the nation [...Jordan] will remain impregnable in the face of all attempts of treachery and terrorism."
With this collective defiant gesture against the recent violence, Jordanians are showing that very cohesion.
