Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Germany formally handed over 16 armoured vehicles to Jordanian authorities on Sunday, part of a defence aid package aimed at helping the country secure its borders.

A further 34 models of the Marder infantry fighting vehicle are to be delivered to Jordan by the end of next year as part of a German initiative intended to help stabilize regions in crisis.

Jordan is host to one of the world‘s largest numbers of refugees fleeing the ongoing civil war in neighbouring Syria.

"If we are not ready to bring security to these countries [...], then they will quickly be overrun by terrorists," German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen said during a handover ceremony in the capital, Amman.

Jordan is also to receive an additional 88 million euros (92.9 million dollars) in security aid, largely to be spent on military development, as well as 70 trucks and 56 minibusses.

Germany has set aside 100 million euros this year and 130 million in 2017 for its military aid programme. Among the other countries selected for the programme are Iraq, Tunisia, Mali, Nigeria and Niger.
