Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that an Israeli citizen had been killed on Wednesday while on an excursion in Jordan.
A report was received that an Israeli hiker had fallen from a cliff during a visit near the village of Ajar, which is close to Petra. Three other Israelis who were with him described the hiker's condition as serious, and contacted the Arava rescue unit in Israel.
The hiker's identity was not published but his family has been notified.
The Israeli embassy asked police and Jordanian authorities for assistance and tried to bring rescue teams to the area.
Bynighttime the rescue crew reached the area on foot, and pronounced the hiker dead and carried his body back on a stretcher to an accessible place.
The body was taken to a hospital and Aryeh Zaken, Israel's deputy consul in Jordan, was in touch with authorities to prevent an autopsy and have the body sent to Israel as soon as possible.
