Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - In Amman’s busy city center, the Q restaurant is offering a unique version of burgers for locals and tourists alike, according to Reuters.
It’s called the “camburger” – and it’s exactly what it sounds like – a hamburger made out of 100% camel meat.
Reuters reported that the restaurant’s owner, Zeyad Al Qusous, who opened the restaurant in 2012, wanted to target foreign visitors and knew most people love burgers; tired of the usual chicken and beef burger fare offered by other restaurants throughout the city, Qusous came up with the idea for the camburger, and it caught on.
"The demand from foreigners for camel burgers is much higher than demand from Arabs, because foreigners come to Jordan to try something new, as the camel burger cannot be found in any place they have been to before, because we are the only restaurant in Jordan and the second restaurant in the Middle East making camel burgers, as the first restaurant is in Abu Dhabi," Reuters quotes the owner as saying.
According to Noor al Turkmani, the restaurant's chef, camel meat is actually healthier than the usual beef version of the burger because it is lower in fat and not as heavy on the stomach.
Qusous buys the camel meat locally from Madaba, about 40km east of Amman
He added that, because camel meat is harder to come by than chicken or beef, camburgers are a bit more expensive. The regular chicken or beef hamburgers costs around 5JDs ($7USD) while camburgers cost 10JDs ($14USD)
However, that doesn’t keep the customers from coming.
On the advice of his friends, Sameeh Abu Shammala, decided to give the burgers a try and is now a regular customer.
Abu Shammala said, “It was a bit strange, the camel meat. When I ate it for the first time, I found it very unique.”
