Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - A picture of a homeless boy doing his homework on the pavement in the Philippines has gone viral after 20-years-old student, Joyce Torrefranca, posted the picture on her Facebook.
Since it was posted online, the photo of nine-year-old Daniel Carbrera was shared thousands of times, going viral and leading to a huge number of donations for Daniel and his family in the Philippines.
Torrefranca, who is a medical technology student, captioned her Facebook post: "I got inspired by a kid."
Cabrera, who dreams of becoming a policeman, will now be able to pursue his dream after donations of cash, school supplies and a college scholarship was given to him, as reported by the Telegraph.
"We're overjoyed. I don't know what I will do with all of these blessings," his mother, a 42-year-old grocery store employee and domestic helper told AFP. "Now, Daniel will not have to suffer just to finish his studies."
The young boy, who is at a Grade 3 elementary school student in Mandaue city, only had a single pencil after one of his fellow students stole his second pencil from him.
According to the Telegraph, a Local politician, Samuel Pagdilao, of the Anti-Crime and Terrorism through Community Involvement & Support (ACT-CIS) party, awarded Daniel an unspecified "scholarship grant.” It was also reported that the local police force also helped to raised funds and provided groceries for the family.
His mother and her three youngest children, including Daniel, whose father died in 2013 due to severe diarrhea, have been living in her employer's mini-grocery store since their home was destroyed by fire five years ago.
The mother of the boy has said that she earns 80 ($1.76) a day, working at the store as well as a domestic helper for the store's owners. She then makes extra by selling cigarettes and candy on the streets on Mandaue, an urban center on Cebu island in the central Philippines.
