King meets British defense secretary, lawmakers

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - His Majesty King Abdullah II, on Wednesday, discussed with British Secretary of Defense, Michael Fallon means to cement ties between the two kingdoms in military, defense and training spheres.

His Majesty and Fallon stressed the importance of continued coordination on a strategic level with regards to crises facing the Middle East region and ways to address them, in addition to developments in the region especially Iraq, Syria and Libya within regional and international partnership.

Separately, His Majesty met with President of the House of Lords, Baroness D'Souza and a number of members of the two chambers of parliament and discussed with them bilateral ties, regional and international issues.

The King, during the meeting, highlighted the need of cooperation between the Jordanian and British parliaments, which will reflect positively on ties between the two countries.

Counter-terrorism efforts also figured high during the meeting, where the King stressed that collective endeavors within a comprehensive approach are needed to confront this danger. He said such approach should include military, security, ideological, social and educational dimensions.

On Syria, His Majesty said the crisis in this Arab country is getting more complicated which requires the international community to intensify efforts to bring about a political solution to this crisis.

Highlighting Jordan's reform drive, His Majesty said the Kingdom made advanced steps towards achieving gradual, steady and comprehensive reform.

He spoke about legislation governing political life, namely the decentralization, municipalities, elections and political parties laws which, he said, have an important role in promoting public participation in the decision-making process.

King Abdullah highlighted Jordanian women's role in political life and their contribution to support the overall national development march.

His Majesty also spoke about major burdens being borne by Jordan as a result of regional turmoil, mainly a massive influx of Syrian refugees on Jordanian territory. He said the large number of refugees placed massive pressure on the Kingdom's already-strained resources, especially in refugee host communities in the northern region.

"His Majesty King Abdullah II has a holistic and broad understanding of the world and its issues, he is a strategic expert, and capable of proposing solutions to the problems facing the Middle East," President of the House of Lords, Baroness D'Souza said in remarks to the Jordan News Agency (Petra).

She added: "One of the issues we discussed today is striking greater cooperation and coordination between the various countries to address regional challenges." Head of the All Party-Parliamentary Jordan Group, Crispin Blunt said: "We had a constructive dialogue with His Majesty the King, who as a global figure, is known for his communication with influential world powers." Blunt said Jordan continues to maintain stability amid tough regional circumstances thanks to its wise leadership.
