Stable consumer prices in Ramadan –– chamber of commerce

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - All foodstuff will remain in sufficient supply in the local market during Ramadan and there will be no price hikes during the holy month of fasting when the demand for food staples usually spikes, according to the Jordan Chamber of Commerce (JCC).
"No rises in the prices of food commodities in the domestic market will occur during the holy month since large quantities of foodstuff of various kinds will be in abundance, besides a decrease in consumer sentiment," said Raed Hamadah, JCC representative of the food sector.
Hamadah, speaking during a press conference, said strong competition among traders is in the consumers' favour, pointing to offers made on basic food items at commercial centres, noting that malls had vowed to refrain from raising prices during Ramadan.
The declared price reductions are for real as they are subject to monitoring by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply, he told reporters, assuring that the Kingdom's strategic staple stocks, including wheat and barley, are sufficient for a period of between 3-12 months.
He said JCC is keen on providing a sufficient supply of various foodstuffs all through the year, particularly during Ramadan, to meet the anticipated surge in demand, adding that the commercial sector viewed Ramadan as a month of social solidarity and charity, not an opportunity to exploit the citizens.
Hamadah said that the Chamber will keep track of the amount of commodities in the domestic market, urging the public to change their consumption behaviour, adding that there is no need for frantic buying or stocking up on food since all items are in abundance and enough for several months.
He said the JCC was open to any complaints by citizens and would try to solve them as quickly as possible.
Hamadah also praised organisers of the 2015 Jordan Food Exhibition that opened on June 9 ahead of Ramadan, which, he said, was an opportunity to familiarize the public with the quality and standards of food commodities in the local market.
