Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The U.S. Embassy in Amman has called off a warning to American citizens to stay away from upscale malls in Jordan's capital because of a possible threat of attacks.

The embassy said Tuesday that "based on current information" the warning from late February is no longer in effect.

Jordan is a key member of a U.S.-led military coalition against the extremist Islamic State group which holds large areas in neighboring Iraq and Syria.

The embassy says extremists "continue to express interest in attacking malls, restaurants and other soft targets throughout the region and in Jordan."

It urged visitors to public areas to be vigilant.

Some Jordanian officials had expressed dismay at the initial embassy warning, saying it potentially scared off visitors at a time when Jordan's tourism industry is struggling.
