Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Around 100 foreign tourists were rescued after their bus stuck in snow in the southern historical and archeological city of Petra.

"Police succeeded over the past two days in rescuing 100 tourists in cooperation with the civil defense," the head of Petra region, Mohamed al-Nawafleh, told The Anadolu Agency.

He added that the stranded tourists were helped to go back to their hotels.

Jordanian Tourism Minister, Nidal Qatamin, meanwhile, said his ministry had taken a series of precautionary measures to guarantee the safety of tourists visiting Jordan, while the country was hit by severe snowfall.

"Tourism police and civil defense forces evacuated groups of tourists during the snowstorm while tourism centers continued to work around the clock to ensure the safety of the tourists," Qatamin told AA.

Petra is a world-famous tourist site. It was selected by UNESCO as one of the seven wonders of the world.
Jordan, along with several neighboring countries, has been contending with a severe snowstorm since Tuesday night.

The snowstorm in Jordan has reached its peak in the early hours of Sunday, prompting Prime Minister Abdullah Ensou to give all state facilities the day off.

Snow has blocked several main roads in Amman, including that leading to the airport amid reports that many regions in the country have been isolated by the storm, dubbed "Huda," an Anadolu Agency correspondent reported.

Jordanian authorities said that the northern part of Amman has been blocked by snow and efforts are underway to clear the roads.

The authorities have been bracing for Huda after a similar storm, dubbed "Alexa," left 16 Jordanians dead in January of last year.
