Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Member of Parliament Maddallah Tarawneh said he was surprised and outraged by remarks made by British Ambassador to Jordan, Peter Millett, who, following the execution of 11 convicted criminals on Sunday, had said that he "regrets Jordan’s implementation of the death penalty." Tarawneh, who is Secretary-General of Al-Wasat Islamic Party, said the envoy's comments, posted on the UK embassy's page on Facebook, were tantamount to an unacceptable interference in Jordan's internal affairs.

The lawmaker demanded that the foreign ministry should summon the ambassador over his remarks and inform him that the matter is a domestic affair that he has nothing to do with.

With regards to Millet's comments that the capital punishment "undermines human dignity, and there is no conclusive evidence that it has any value as a deterrent," Tarawneh said such comments run contrary to the Jordanian public opinion as the majority of Jordanians backed the move.
